Simone Martini and Lippo Memmi
The Annunciation
1333
Tempera on wood
Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy
The portrait is modeled on
a half-length image of St. Ansanus that Martini painted in 1326. Once again the saint is pictured as a blond, beardless youth with a small palm branch and a standard with the black-and white flag of Siena.
